German midfielder Mesut Ozil who is currently in the thick of a contract battle with the Gunners, with only a year left on his current deal has expressed his desire to stay.
However, speaking on the club’s tour to Australia, he was at pains to point out he would prefer to remain with the Gunners than depart – and added that he hopes for talks to reach a conclusion in the near future.
‘It is definitely my preference to stay,’ Ozil said at the launch of the club’s Puma-made third kit.
‘It is such a great club and I have always said that I feel very good at Arsenal. Once everyone is back in London we will sit down and discuss about the future.
‘For now the most important thing is our pre-season and getting through the tour, training and getting fitness. When I’m back in London, we will sit down and discuss.’
Ozil added that he had not spoken to fellow contract rebel Alexis Sanchez – who also has a year left on his deal and who has been linked with a seismic move to Manchester City.
‘I was on vacation and did not think about anyone else,’ he said.
‘I tried to clear my mind for myself. Obviously the player (Sanchez) has to think about his own future and that will be his own decision. It is something everyone has to respect.’
